The talented Long-way Around Quartet hosted their 18th Annual Scholarship Concert and Presentation ceremony, held at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Over four thousand dollars was given out to students to attend college in the Fall of 2008. The scholarship recipients were Dana Weinstein, Jaquilla Jasmine Ross, Kevin D. Patterson, and Lamont Williams.

Saturday June 16 marked a “Golden Oldies” birthday celebration for Venora McKinney, one of Milwaukee’s “golden girls.” Family and friends gathered at the Radisson Milwaukee North hotel to mark Venora’s birthday with a buffet dinner and dancing to classics oldies music. Guests were also asked to bring 70 like coins or bills of any denominationcreatively wrapped in lieu of a traditional birthday gift. Prizes were awarded for the most creative presentations.

     In his comments, Smiley expanded on the meaning of true leadership and what each of us can do to improve the conditions in our community. In defining leadership, Smiley went on to say that anyone
who calls themselves a leader is not one. Smiley took the definition of leadership from one of his close friends Dr. Cornell West, Professor at Princeton University stating, “You can’t lead people you don’t love, and you can’t save people you don’t serve.”
     All throughout his impassioned remarks, Smiley continued to move the audience making references to his grandmother and noted civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as other notable figures while highlighting the fact that true leaders have a deep love for their fellowman, which allows them to serve with compassion. Smiley delivered the keynote speech for the conference, which explored ways of healing, preserving and uplifting from within today’s Black families through leadership and commitment.

     Celebrated television and radio broadcaster as well as best selling author Tavis Smiley was in town recently to kick-off The Black Family Conference, a two-day event focusing on preserving, strengthening, and healing the African American family that took place at Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ.
     Smiley spoke before a large audience made up of community organizers, faith leaders and youth.
